Wet Burritos

Posted on December 4, 2025 by Admin
Here’s a restaurant-style Wet Burrito recipe — saucy, cheesy, and absolutely perfect for a cozy dinner. This is the classic Tex-Mex/Midwest–style wet burrito smothered in a rich red sauce and melted cheese.

If you want chicken, beef, or vegetarian versions, just tell me!

🌯 Wet Burritos (Smothered Burritos)

⭐ What Makes a Burrito “Wet”?

A wet burrito is covered in a warm enchilada-style sauce, topped with melted cheese, and baked until bubbly. It’s comforting, hearty, and fork-and-knife delicious.

🧀 Ingredients (Makes 4 Large Burritos)

For the Filling

  • 1 lb ground beef or shredded chicken

  • 1 tbsp oil

  • ½ onion, diced

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 packet taco seasoning (or homemade)

  • ½ cup water or broth

  • 1 can (15 oz) refried beans or whole black beans

  • 1 cup cooked rice (optional)

For the Wet Burrito Sauce

  • 1 can (10 oz) red enchilada sauce

  • 1 cup tomato sauce

  • ½ cup beef or chicken broth

  • 1 tsp cumin

  • 1 tsp chili powder

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • Salt to taste

For Assembly

  • 4 large (10–12 inch) flour tortillas

  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, or Mexican blend)

  • Lettuce, tomato, sour cream, green onions (optional toppings)

🔥 Instructions

1. Make the Filling

  1. Heat oil in a skillet. Add onion and cook until softened.

  2. Add ground beef (or chicken) and cook until browned.

  3. Add garlic and cook 1 minute.

  4. Stir in taco seasoning + ½ cup water/broth.

  5. Add refried beans and rice (if using). Mix until combined and warmed.

2. Make the Sauce

  1. In a small pot, combine:

    • enchilada sauce

    • tomato sauce

    • broth

    • cumin, chili powder, garlic powder

  2. Simmer on low 5–10 minutes for deeper flavor.

3. Assemble the Burritos

  1. Warm tortillas until soft and foldable.

  2. Spread filling down the center of each tortilla.

  3. Roll tightly: fold sides in, then roll up.

  4. Place seam-side down in a baking dish.

4. Make Them “Wet”

  1. Pour sauce generously over the burritos.

  2. Top with loads of shredded cheese.

  3. Bake at 375°F for 15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.

Or microwave individually for a quick version!
