tater tots

Posted on November 26, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a simple, classic tater tots recipe with clear headings. You can make them from scratch or follow the crispy-fry method for frozen ones. Both versions are included.

Homemade Tater Tots

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 3 large russet potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons flour (or cornstarch)
  • Oil for frying (or baking spray for oven method)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Potatoes

  1. Peel potatoes and place them whole into a pot.
  2. Cover with water and bring to a boil.
  3. Boil for 6–7 minutes only. They should be partially cooked, not soft.
  4. Drain and let cool completely.

2. Grate and Season

  1. Grate cooled potatoes using the large holes of a grater.
  2. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, and flour.
  3. Mix gently until the potatoes hold together.

3. Shape the Tots

  • Form small cylinders (about 1 inch long) using your hands and place on a tray.

4. Cook the Tater Tots

Option A: Frying (Crispiest)

  1. Heat oil to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Fry tots in batches for 3–4 minutes until golden.
  3. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with salt.

Option B: Baking

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Brush or spray tots with oil.
  3. Bake 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Option C: Air Fryer

  1. Spray tots with oil.
  2. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 12–15 minutes, shaking once.

Tips

  • For extra crispiness, chill shaped tots for 30 minutes before cooking.
  • Add grated onion or parmesan for more flavor.
  • Freeze unbaked tots on a tray, then store in a bag for quick homemade frozen tots.

Bonus: Crispy Frozen Tater Tots (Restaurant Style)
