When the liver is diseased, these parts begin to hurt

Posted on January 16, 2026 by Admin
When the liver is diseased, pain is usually indirect (the liver itself has few pain receptors). Discomfort comes from stretching of its outer capsule or irritation of nearby structures.

Common Areas That May Hurt

  1. Upper right abdomen

    • Just under the right rib cage

    • Most common location of liver-related pain

    • May feel dull, aching, or pressure-like

  2. Right shoulder

    • Referred pain via the phrenic nerve

    • Often mistaken for muscle or joint pain

  3. Right shoulder blade / upper back

    • Deep, nagging discomfort

    • Can worsen with movement or deep breathing

  4. Upper middle abdomen (epigastric area)

    • Pain or fullness below the breastbone

    • Often confused with stomach issues

  5. General abdominal bloating or tightness

    • From fluid buildup (ascites)

    • Causes discomfort rather than sharp pain

Other Symptoms Often Seen With Liver Disease

  • Fatigue and weakness

  • Nausea or loss of appetite

  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)

  • Dark urine, pale stools

  • Itching

  • Easy bruising or bleeding

Important Notes

  • Early liver disease may cause no pain at all

  • Sudden, severe pain can indicate inflammation, infection, or gallbladder involvement

  • Persistent pain + systemic symptoms = medical evaluation needed

If this question relates to your own symptoms, tell me:

  • Where the pain is

  • How long it’s been present

  • Any known liver condition or test results

I can help you decide what to do next.
